Professor of Surgery at the Vita-Salute San Raffaele University, he obtained his specialization in Digestive Surgery in 2004 and a Ph.D. in Robotics and Computer Science Applied to Surgery in 2005. His training has been enriched by international experiences at the University of Illinois at Chicago (1999-2002) and at the John Radcliffe Hospital of the University of Oxford (2003-2005).
His surgical practice focuses on the digestive system, with a particular focus in colorectal surgery, favoring minimally invasive techniques. Academically, he has held the position of Associate Professor of Surgery at Temple University and the University of Illinois, with over 230 scientific publications, textbooks, and guidelines for scientific societies. He has also been actively involved in politics, serving as Deputy Minister of Health in the Conte II government and as Undersecretary of Health in the Draghi government. In line with his commitment at the beginning of his election as a senator in 2018, he concluded his political experience at the end of his parliamentary term.
